A review of digital marketing courses in dublin

From time to time, many people ask my advice in terms of which of the many digital marketing courses offered in Dublin are the best. There are literally scores of courses available and it is very difficult to make a recommendation when so many of the courses target different types of student.

In other words, depending on the circumstances and budget of the student, I’d recommend a very different course. This article will provide a simple review of some of the best digital marketing courses in dublin broken down into a variety of categories.

Top 4 digital marketing courses in dublin

Best ‘Professional’ Digital Marketing Course

The best professional course and in my opinion one of the best digital marketing courses on the market is from the Digital Marketing Institute. The DMI is an organisation which have come on in leaps and bounds in terms of quality and expertise over the past 5 years.

The first organisation in the world to offer a packaged digital marketing training program, they now offer a variety of programmes including a Masters and some online offerings. The course I will focus on is the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing which can be done intensively over 5 days during the day or in the evenings over 10 weeks.

This course would definitely suit business and marketing professionals looking to upskill and coming in at €1,495 it is by no means cheap, however the use of specialist lecturers to deliver each topic means that you can be guaranteed huge depth to each lesson as each lecturer will be an expert in their area. I must emphasise the quality of both the content and expertise on offer here as this is the main selling point for the DMI.

All of the major areas of digital marketing are covered on the programme – SEO, Search Advertising, Social Media Marketing etc. Indeed this statement will be true of all of the course offerings discussed below.

Pros

  • Superb content
  • Specialist lecturers
  • Industry focused
  • Networking Opportunities

Cons

  • Cost
  • Limited opportunities for practical exercises

The quality of the learning material, lecturers and notes is superb and for that reason I’d give the DMI a rank of 9/10

Best ‘Free’ Digital Marketing Course

The word free in this context relates to the government initiative known as Springboard, which offers free courses to the unemployed in areas that are deemed to have employment opportunities. So this is a qualified version of free…you need to qualify or be eligible for Springboard.

In my opinion, this is a scheme which hasn’t received the credit it deserves and has played a huge role in both up-skilling and improving the employment prospects of tens of thousands of people to date.

In terms of Digital Marketing, my recommendation for the best digital marketing course on Springboard would have to be the Certificate in Digital Marketing from Dublin Business School.

A one year, special purpose Level 7 award which covers four modules relating to various aspects of digital marketing, which gives the course a great deal of digital marketing focus. The course also includes lab sessions which provide an opportunity for students to put their skills into practice and come away with hard skills. The practical focus of the labs sets this course apart from many of the shorter, theory based courses on the market.

Pros

  • Excellent Content
  • Free
  • Practical Emphasis
  • Digital Marketing Focus
  • Level 7

Cons

  • Lots of assessment
  • Time Commitment: 2 evenings a week for 25 weeks

Best ‘Value’ Digital Marketing Course

If you are able to commit to 9 months of full time study and are on a budget, the best digital marketing course in terms of both content and value is the 1 year Level 6 Fetac Advanced Certificate in Digital & Social Media Marketing in Blackrock Further Education Institute.

The BFEI course is full time and covers 8 modules including Digital Marketing and Web Authoring. The inclusion of Web Authoring on the programme is a real asset as this provides participants with an extra layer of insight into areas such as Search Engine Optimisation, Content Marketing and Email Marketing.

Starting at just €250 for the year (a government levy may apply for those not in receipt of Medical Cards, Back to Education Allowance, VTOS or Grants) this course offers excellent value and places a heavy emphasis on practical skills

Pros

  • Excellent Content
  • Excellent Value
  • Practical Emphasis
  • Web Authoring module is included

Cons

  • Additional business modules such as Communications, Management etc covered on the course, which means the course is broader and less focused than the other digital marketing courses mentioned
  • Level 6 on the framework – while this may not be a con, compared to some of the other digital marketing programmes on the market it is lower on the National Qualifications Framework

Digital Marketing Course Rank of 8/10

Best ‘Post Graduate’ Digital Marketing Course

In terms of skills and qualifications, there really can be only one winner for the crown of best digital marketing course and that would be the MSc in Digital Marketing from Smurfit’s Graduate Business School, UCD.

While the content of the Digital Marketing Institute would be at the top of the table in terms of quality and depth, just the name Smurfit Graduate Business School commands huge respect and prestige in the market and the course boasts some great links to industry (companies and agencies alike) too.

The course can be taken full time or part time and combines both strong academic theory and research with practitioner led modules which focus on creating digital marketing strategies.

At €6,500 and with eligibility criteria of either a second class honours degree in a related discipline or three years professional experience in Marketing, this course is definitely not for everyone

Pros

  • Excellent Content
  • Excellent Industry Links
  • Practical Emphasis
  • Superb contacts with major players in the market
  • Masters – Level 9 on Framework
  • Mixture of Academic and Practical

Cons

  • Mixture of Academic and Practical – No this isn’t a mistake, for some the Academic requirements of the course are very demanding and ultimately unnecessary if I’m looking to up-skill or gain a job in the field of digital marketing.
  • Eligibility – Won’t suit the unemployed or people looking to up-skill from a non marketing background etc.
  • Cost – €6,500

Overall Course Rank of 9.5/10

Special Mention Course

While I haven’t done this in the other categories, I do feel that the MSc in Digital Marketing and Analytics from Dublin Institute of Technology deserves a mention, mostly because of the fact that PR Smith is part of the lecturing team. PR Smith would be an extremely well known name in the digital marketing sector. An author of several books on the area and the creator of the SOSTAC model which was voted one of the top 3 business models by the Chartered Institute of Marketing and is a strategy framework commonly used by businesses. The course itself also combines theory and practice and has built up an excellent reputation, that combined with the industry and academic credentials of PR Smith brings this course into a very close second place.
